About Us

Health data research activities at Leicester are lead by Professor Anthony Brookes and Professor Paul Lambert The majority of the work is funded by Health Data Research UK. Prof. Brookes' research interests lie in the responsible sharing and use of health related data while Prof. Lambert’s research interest lie in the statistical analysis of electronic health record data.

Prof. Brookes' research team concentrates on making health related data F.A.I.R. (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) to allow them to be used in research, while still adhering to legal and ethical standards required when handling data on people. To this end he is highly active in national and international standards development efforts towards data interoperability, and he co-leads IT aspects of major European programs concerned with rare disease research (Solve-RD and EJP-RD projects).

Prof. Lambert leads methodological and applied work mainly in the areas of cancer utilizing linked cancer registration data with much of his work in the area of survival analysis in epidemiology. His applied work includes international comparisons of cancer survival. He has developed software to implement the methods he has developed to aid the transition of novel methodology into practice. Prof Lambert works part time (30% FTE) at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet. Further details on Prof. Lamberts work can be found on his personal website.

Two part-time HDR facility staff are available to handle general enquiries and booking requires. Please direct email enquiries to either Spencer Gibson or Monika Maini

HDR UK brings together major stakeholders in academia, industry and the NHS, the HDR UK is combining the research and healthcare sectors to realise the potential of "big data" in health research. HDR UK includes 86 organisations across the UK, involved in 8 research hub themes. The focus is on conducting health research in a scaleable, team-science manner.

Research Fellows

To facilitate the HDR initiative two Rutherford Fund Fellowships have been funded by HDR UK.

Dr. Chiara Batini, works in the field of epidemiology, exploring the influence of genetics on smoking behaviour in different ethnic populations

Tim Beck holds a HDR UK funded UKRI Innovation Fellowship to support his research into the use of text processing, semantics and ontologies to study health data, with a focus on the biomedical domain of "phenotype". He is the operational lead for the comprehensive Genome-Wide Association Study database, GWAS Central, which provides advanced tools to allow visualisation, comparison and discovery of summary-level GWAS findings. Tim is the ELIXIR-UK Node Steering Committee member for the University of Leicester, he sits on the ELIXIR-UK Management Committee, and is co-lead of the ELIXIR Health Data Focus Group.

Leicester University offers a number of short training courses to help researchers improve their health data research skill set. Due to the diverse nature of health data research the courses are provided by personnel in various university departments.

To foster an atmosphere of collaboration between researchers from these departments a dedicated research space with hot desk facilities has been established. The resulting research space is intended to allow researchers to congregate in the same physical space, allowing them to share expertise and form novel interdisciplinary collaborations.

An associated support team has been assembled to assist researchers in accessing relevant training and expertise. The training page highlights some of the courses available. However, due to the complex nature of this area of research, users can also contact Spencer Gibson for more specific and or detailed questions relating to training or expertise sharing opportunities. The team will aim to give an initial response within 48 hours.
